Analysis of Brides Magazine

In this magazine front cover, we can automatically see that the target audience are brides. We know this because the mast head specifically says 'BRIDES'. They have used the colour pink to represent the femininity of women. In the skyline, it states that it is 'The UK's No.1 Best Selling Bridal Magazine'. Using a superlative (best selling), it captures the audiences attention and pulls them in into buying the product; from the reassurance that it sells well, it must be a good magazine. It also uses the 'super luxe issue' so that the brides to be think that they're in for a special surprise. It makes them believe that this issue is better than the rest. It is supported through bigger and brighter colours. It is also on the left side third so it can be seen whilst on shop shelves.

The main image on this front cover is of a bride. We know she is a bride because of the traditional white wedding dress, the props such as her wedding ring and jewellery. The main colours that are used are pink, black, white and gold. The pink represents romance, love and femininity. The black is to contrast the white to really stand out to appeal to the audience. And the gold is to show the expensive and luxury side of the magazine. By making the magazine look luxurious,  it makes the audience want to purchase it because if it looks rich, then the content inside must be as important. It is a very effective way to lure brides in as it makes them believe that they are important and they must have this luxury item.

The plugs on the front cover shows many areas of the wedding industry. It ranges from 'best bridal updos' to 'divine colour schemes'. By specialising in many parts of the wedding, it widens its target audiences to want to pick it up and read about things they might not have considered.

Preliminary Task

The project I am working on is to produce a front cover for a school magazine. This has to be appropriate to the content in the magazine. I will do this by photographing students (possibly within the school). The key requirements set are that we have to take a medium close-up shot of the student. We also need to create a mast-head and lay things out according to a usual ‘magazine type’ style. The time frames we have to finish everything are:
 • Research and planning – Friday 26th October
 • Production – Friday 23rd November
 • Evaluation – Friday 14th December

My target audience is sixth-form students. I plan to find out what students in our sixth-form want and what they don’t want. This will help me produce the front cover based on what the majority of the students want. This will improve my work by appealing to the audience by finding out what they want.
